Hey I'm looking for suggestions on where to get a water pump for a diy sump build.
I only have a 50 gallon tank, but I'm trying to learn more and one of the things on my to do list is build an overflow and sump for it. What suggestions do you guys have for a good quality brand of pump, something very affordable, and where can I get it online? My stupid community makes it hard to get ahold of things sometimes!
On a side note I was thinking of using a rubbermaid container for the sump, what are most people using for dividers when using rubbermaids?

Check out Ebay for QuietOne pumps like the Model 1200.
It will give you about 250gph at 3 feet and do so using a scant 25.5 watts
250gph is a 5x turnover rate, that will work fine.

$22 bux + shipping

You might want to look into those "stacked plastic drawers" in a stand, they are stocking the hell out of, at Wal*Mart these days.
like these>>>> http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10877957

Basically,
Just drill the bottom of the drawers, and fill with SCRUBBIES and prefilter material, then set the whole thing into the rubbermaid.
Add the return pump and plumbing...BIGGEST BANG for your buck, and great filtration for your finned friends...

Oh yeah and on another side note....
I just happen to know where the best deal,
and the coolest mofo in the galaxy that sells SCRUBBIES is too!!...

When you need your Media this is the Cool Mofo to look up>>> http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/member.php?u=4036

Hope this will get ya started... ;)

I have just bought one of these....

I too want to use a rubbermaid for my sump and look forward to seeing some good advice for others here too.
Which DANNER did you get?
I have had good results with them, when I used them submerged...They do need careful attention to the fit and tightness of the impeller cover.

The screws have a tendency to strip out, because they are stainless with a large pitch and they screw directly into the pump body...doing routine maintenance taking the cover on and off the plastic will fatigue and I had to go bigger screws and all that crap.

The difference in the QuietOnes besides being more efficient on the power is the impeller cover and o-ring seal is more in line with maintenence needs.
The entire cover does a twist lock into the body without any hardware to strip.

With the issues on the DANNERs I ran them submerged and the slight leaking on the front impeller covers didn't create a problem with leaking water all over because they were already in water, still in all, it bugged me.

Otherwise they are good, reliable, long running SOB's with a tad more initial cost gph to gph to buy and slightly more wattage to gph to run...~BenO

I went with the MD12 (1200 gph) and the extra long cable.
Thanks for the advice on it, I will keep an eye on it. Mine will also be submerged, so shouldn't be an issue.
Nice one Bro, My last one was the 9.5...
Yeah shouldn't bea problem submerged...

I'd be sure to keep the foam prefilter it comes with, easy to service in the design of the sump, so it can keep the gritty debris out, that could foul the bushings...
It does a fantastic job of that, so it will need weekly cleaning to keep the flow up...;)

Thanks for more good advice Bud, I'll be sure to keep that filter on ;)

badger126, sorry for hijacking your thread, good luck with your search!!

No big deal, I like the idea of using the drawer system, does anyone have any ideas for dividers in an actual rubbermaid tub? I'm working with limited space( didn't think of a sump when I built my stand) so I'd like to get all the ideas that I can then go to the store and see what I can throw together.
Thanks for the links on pumps, I'd like to go at least 500gph but that gives me a starting point.
