The past week or so i have been thinking about weaning my 11" Florida and 6" longnose gar off of live. However, this is my first time doing this and was wondering how to approach it. Both gars only eat when no one is around.
Any tips?

starve it

What are you going to be feeding? I'd start with market shrimp soaked in garlic.

from what i have read the best thing to do is first use live food, but slowly try to hand feed the fish, then switch to market shrimp ect...

One of my gars, Fluffy, went right for silversides, even when they were just laying on the bottom of the tank. The other, Lucky, refuses all but live -- but then he only has one eye, so he's sort of a special case. I'd try just throwing some stuff in. You might be surprised what they'll take. And, as for starving them, Lucky went five weeks while I tried to get him on non-live, and he still didn't take them. So, yeah, starve if you have to, but sometimes it just doesn't happen, so you should be prepared for that. However, I think in your case it will go okay because both of yours probably have both of their eyes. Fluffy will eat earthworms, slilversides, massivore, and even algae wafers. Good luck.

Sometimes they'll go for floating foods first. Try freeze dried krill. It's a bright orange, which gets their attention, and it floats, which makes it easy to get, and gives them more time to get to it before other tank mates do.

Also, I'd get them associated with you giving them food. Try hand or tong feeding them live feeders until they readily take them FROM YOU. After that, it should be easy to get them on to other foods, because they'll associate anything that you give them as being food.

I have heard this plenty of times, is there any reasoning behind it???

maybe i have been feeding them too much, because both gars don't seem at all interested in me or the food until i turn out the light, and leave the room. Will starving them for 5 weeks change their attitude towards me and their food?

As I said, 5 weeks did nothing to change Lucky's mind. I think that if they're going to change over, it will happen pretty quickly. If they're not, it's not going to happen. Others may have had different experiences.
