where's the beef?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have always given my discus beef heart and i have read articles about enzymes in discus stomach and that they can mange to break down the beef hart to proteins.
All the breeders in Singapore and Germany is using beef hart to speed the growth on discus.

Why shouldn't P`s be even better on that being opportunistic feeders and i think they are more likely to get some mammal meat in the wild than discus.

you can use it as treat but I wouldn't feed them beef as stable diet.
pound for pound I believe fish meat contains more proteins than beef so if you are just trying to give more proteins to your p's then I don't see why you need to feed beef. (unless I was totally wrong and beef has far more protein than fish (pound for pound)).
in the wild P's main food source is fish, but since they are opportunist feeder they'll be more than happy to chew down any prey when given the chance which include some mammal but that's only a small portion of their diet and that doesn't happen all the time.

Only way my fish have been getting beef since I learned better is when my brothers cooking and I hear evil laughter by the fish tank.

I think of it in two different ways. The piranha go nuts over beef like any human does over sweet/fattening/anything else thats bad for us. We like it because its bad for us and full of callories our ancestors would have fought long and hard for. However much like the fish were not fighting off lions and tigers for our food maybe at most a family member for the last slice of cake.

Plus I think about what would happen if I only ate beef for every meal compared to talapia. I know I'm not a fish but I think even the leanest of cows wouldn't compare with a nice white fish diet.

Salmon vs beef though I wouldn't know what way to go.

Well I'm like matte g I don't have no problem feeding beefheart. I feed beef 2-4 times a week.its by no means their staple diet. My fish get fed the whole menu.n its never just one thing at feeding time.its always at the very least 2-3 things in one sitting. I was just curious who else doesn't believe the bs surrounded around the no red meat diet. I already knew matte g liked to feed it too but thanks for your thoughts just the same!thanks Jp for your thoughts too! Anyone else have anything to add to this debate??beef its what's for DINNER!

I don't think the fish would care what kind of meat you feed to them, it's for you to decide what would be the best for your pet fish. as long as you think that's good for them then keep do what you have been doing. just make sure the beef are lean

the meat itself isn't too bad it's very high in protein but it's also high in fats and these mammallian fats are more diffcult on the piranhas digestive tract than the fats found in fish. Essentialy they don't get as much nutrition and calories from the meat as they would from a similar sized peice of fish.

beef heart is ok as a treat (once a week or so) because the heart is very low in fat.
