What kind of fish are you hoping to aquire? Or are you hoping to upgrade to bigger tanks? Focusing on trying new filtration methods? Maybe you want to go the DIY route?
Thanks, I like these kind of threads because IMHO it's always interesting to see what my fellow hobbyists are doing in the hobby. Plus a lot of times you might get inspired by seeing someone mention fish or something else you hadn't heard of or thought of. So you're trying your hand at tank building. Pretty cool, I personally would never have the guts. Too scared of my own lack of skill to tackle something like that.Currently keeping cichlids and other tropicals. Focus right now is on growing out my loaches and a young flowerhorn.
Working on upgrading tanks all the time and my tankbuilding in general. My current build is largish, ~400 gallons, but i have plans for some smaller rimless builds after this is completed.
Fishkeeping wise, ive been trying to branch out into saltwater for awhile but keep getting stalled by this or that, mostly the costs associated with it.
Ultimate goal is to set up a large, long term fowlr setup for big predators.
Good thread, interested in what others have to say.
I had one time thought of a shark too but my saltwater interests have been more toward Octupus and Lionfish as of late. I'd love to have a tank for each sometime in the future.I would like to upgrade to a larger tank size, at least 180 gallons. Would want to try aqua ponies or diy filtration. But my long time goal I had for a long time is getting a shark, so getting a 300+ gallon is my ultimate goal.
I always thought it was funny how are fish interests intersect so often. I still remember trying to beat you out for those pseudauchenipterus nodosus from Wes. You didn't know but I was dying for his next shipment to come in and you scooped them on me. lolHave a 125g standard and 120g wide. Was planning for a 8x2-3.5x2-2.5 but on hold due to finances being pulled everywhere. Have my polys and catfish isn’t there.
Bigger tank for my trachycorystes trachycorystes. In the same tank want to add a tocantinsia piresi, gymnothorax polyuranodon, pseudocanthicus serratus, Odoe pike, ,emisorubim platyrhyncho, lake turkana poly sen, and crenicichla sp tapajos or zebrinus.
Also want to retry wallacei catfish again.
Want to retry the diy denitrator filter. Have some mods I want to try and maybe tweak some of what I was doing.
All on hold.
Yes. We do have those pikes and driftwood cats in common. I’m a big fan of the look of the trachy and tocantisia. I think it’ll work out in a bigger setup with some bottom fish to distract. Like the atabapo 2 pikes as well. I’d even settle for some stigata although won’t be available for a while.I always thought it was funny how are fish interests intersect so often. I'm hoping to gear a setup toward my Trachycorystes too. They keep locking but never complete the deed, so I'm hoping if a dedicate a setup to just them I'll actually get them to breed. I'm surprised your going for Tocantinsia, I've been asking Wes to see if he could sourc them for me along with some other stuff. I had one from Jeff but it tore my Trachy's to shreds and then upon moving her to a new tank she sulked and I couldn't get her to feed. I tried feeding her with a syringe but she passed none the less.
I'm still into Creni's too. Though I'm going for Atabapo II and Zebrina instead of Tapajos. Other then that I'd like to start keeping Hydrolycus Armatus again and I was hoping to get a collection of some rare Silver Dollars. Cat wise besides the Woodcats I've been into Doradidiae. Rhinodoras Dorbignyi, Platydoras sp Maroni and I'd like to get some Centrodoras brachiatus and Lithodoras dorsalis.
I also wanted to try my hand at a DIY Denitrator and I wanted to try and design and build a custom Hamburg Matten Filter. And the list goes on. My own projects are going slow cause I bought a house and am trying to make it my own as well as the pandemic slowing stuff down.
Lol, I know what you mean. There's just so many amazing fish out there and so little time and room. Can't wait to see your Perch set up when you manage to get it rolling.Jeez, where do I start with a question like that? There's so much I want to do but available space for more tanks is basically non existent now. Which is good really because the house would be full of tanks otherwise, and then my enjoyment would probably decrease in time because of all the work involved. I can't grumble really, I have a 360g fibreglass and a glass 180g. I'm deliberating setting up a huge fibreglass tank out the back as a coldwater European perch set up. That project is the most realistic of all my pipe dreams and the one most likely to come to fruition, eventually.
But for now i'm enjoying what i've got.
Good luck with your career. Hopefully you'll be where you want to with your career sooner rather then later and have time to maintain sme large tanks again.Darn, well I used to have multiple large tanks. 180's 125s ect. I kept a varied assortment... Ive been on the move with my career and Im waiting for a point where I know I will be somewhere for at least 2 years before I get back into tanks... For now its a beta... Hoping to get a 40 breeder with rams going soon. Need to finish this course im currently on.
I live in NYC currently but I bought a house in Georgia and am worried about the water down there so I feel you. You got quite a mix of species there, I'm truly jealous. There's so much I want to do. I want to make room for some of the less commonly seen SA/CA cichlids and I had wanted Fronts at one point as well. The SD mixer sounds sweet. I was hoping to do something like an SD mixer with possibly the Rhinodoras Dorbignyi. My fish room transitioned from a basement room with carpet to a basement room with floor drains and a shower in one corner. I would like to figure out a auto water change system. I have Lake Tanganyika, SE Asia, and SA/CA. I buffer the LT 110g and 55g with LT Cichlid salts and then I have planted tanks as well. The other hurdle is that my municipality uses chloramine in our water system. I don't want a RO/DI system that strips everything. I am considering an inline drinking water filter system that only removes chlorine/chloramine and heavy metals. Those filters only last for 5000ish gallons. I need to do a cost analysis of dechlor vs filters to see which is more cost effective and then find a water reservoir.
My other project is a 220g (6ft x 2ft x 30in) home for my mixer school of SD. I am building the stand for it right now. I plan on setting it on cement block piers. I had the stand set up, placed the tank and added 50g of water. I measured the height of the water left to right and front to back and found enough difference that the tank is now of the stand while I reconvene my stand idea.
Some day I would like to have a Frontosa tank. Could be the 220 after the SD pass on.
I still have my Nodosus as well. I think I have 4-5 right now. Wouldn't mind breeding them as well if possible. I don't know some of the woodcats can be so unpredictable. My Trachys had been fiine for awhile but for awhile now they've become super predatory. I have no idea about the Tocas as I only had one and maybe she was just a one off being as hyper aggressive as she was. I've never seen hostility between woods before that, to that level. My Trachys coexisted with Gulpers and Jaguar Cats for long periods of time with no issue then the occasional grunting match and pushing each other over hides.Yes. Still have the pseudauchenipterus. Lost the smaller ones due to loss of power and bad water quality. Didn’t know till late at night one day. The two I have are doing well.
Once that home is settled there should be plenty of time for some projects.
