Which Amphilophus?

I have a 4’ x 2’ x 2’ 120 Gallon tank that I would like to use as the long term home for a pair of Amphilophus… Filtration will be as needed as will décor… I am not willing to upgrade the tank later, as I already have the tank and am looking to stock it…

I had a pair of Trimacs in it previously but had to rehome them due to an unexpected move & downsize of aquariums. I REALLY liked them and most likely going to aim for another pair for this tank…

I also grew out a small group of Orange Citrinellus, I really liked them but rehomed them when they were only 3“~5”. I like the Orange/Yellow much more than the barred and for this reason as well as adult size, I’m not interested in keeping Chancos.

I would prefer to get them through Ken Davis as Juvis and grow out a small group to achieve a pair. His current variety is:

Amphilophus sp. "Amarillo"
Amphilophus sp. Chancho
Amphilophus citranellus Barred
Amphilophus citranellus Costa Rican Red Face F1
Amphilophus citranellus Colored $8
Amphilophus citranellus F1 Lago Nicaragua
Amphilophus hogaboomorus F1 Rio Choluteca
Amphilophus labiatus F1 Colored
Amphilophus trimaculatum

I would also consider getting them from Jeff Rapps if he had a species Ken didn’t that I decided I wanted… Jeff has the following species that Ken doesn’t

Amphilophus sagittae - colored
Amphilophus xiloaensis
Amphilophus sp. ‘red Isletas’

I am highly partial towards Amphilophus for this set up but have considered a couple other fish including Vieja Argentea…

For no reason other than personal preference I am not interested in any of the Parachromis… I’ve got nothing bad to say about them, I just don’t care for them…

So based on the above information… feel free to offer your suggestions with reasons why… but please don’t just post names without reasons ;)

Amphilophus citranellus Costa Rican Red Face

Mostly because I am really curious to see what an adult looks like. Otherwise the sp. Red isletas, it's really the only Amph I like besides lyonsi.

Is the Costa Rican Red Face a barred or colored Citranellus?

Google doesn't seem to know what they look like either (no images).

I've seen a handful of white/yellow Midas with Red faces... is this what I should expect?

Honestly I have no clue, but am hugely curious about it. Hence why it was my first pick, letting you be the guinea pig for them. :grinno:

I really doubt a pair of Trimacs would work long term in that tank. I think the width is a bit of an issue, had this been a 6' tank it would definitely have worked. I recently gave away my female trimac since my male was making life miserable for her -- in a 6' (126gal) tank! Since you do not have any plans of upgrading for this pair, I don't think would work long-term.

Chanchos are *really* aggressive, and large growing so this might not work too.:)

How about amphilophus lyonsi? I think they have outrageous colors when they are adults, and they are relatively small growing compared to most other amphilophus.

I have a few 1-1.5" CR Red face, it's a barred midas type with a red face, fins tend to get much longer than regular barred midas, To me they have more red than the isletas. I have small group of 1.5-2" xilonesis I'd sell too and a new spawn that is huge. The labiatus growouts I have right now in the 4.5-7" size have tons of color. If you want colored fish I can pick out really nice F1 fish in the labiatus or citranellus in several sizes. I'm taking a lot of these fish with me to the ACA next week so my selection will be greatly reduced after then. Ken
