I have a spotted gar and a channa. I am thinking of getting a bichir as a final addition to the tank. I am stuck between getting a endlicheri, or a ornate. Which has a greater rate of growth? Which of the two would be more active, or is how active a fish is different from fish to fish? The endli looks better to me overall, but the ornate has a better coloration.

Micropeltes. It is considerably smaller than the gar for obvious reasons. A 125-gallon, upgrading when they get bigger.

In which case I would say none.

Micropeltes growth rate is intense.
I have owned 2 and can tell you this for FACT.

It will be double the size of the Gar, and most likely any Polypterus you put with it in no time.

They are also one of the most aggressive fish there is, and are known to take out fish MUCH bigger than them (usually by attacking the stomach) even at a juvenile stage.

Haha I know. But I know of people who have kept Micro's with smaller cichlids successfully without any casualties. I know the risk, small as it may be, is still there but if it is well-fed I believe it is not something impossible to attain. :D But which Polypterus would make for a better fish-keeping experience, the Endlicheri or Ornate?

I know the risks too.
I have outgrown both of mine to over 2ft, and the risk is not "small" by any chance!

I would rather not suggest which Bichir would be "better" as to me that would be signing a death warrant for a fish I am passionate about.

I will let someone else advise you.

i have no experience with channa but i have heard that if they grow up with a certain fish they will most likely never injure that fish. but once establised in a tank anythin added after that will most likely be killed.
i have a congicus and an ornate both wild caught and i love them both :)

You may have heard that, but it is not true.
I'm with TGM. It's not worth it to loose the poly. It's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when" it will kill it's tankmates.

That can be the case with Channa such as Marulioides, possibly even Argus.
Micropeltes are a different kettle of fish.
They are KNOWN to be very unpredictable and violent and just turn on others.

Your fish, yourr inevitable risk.

james, im just repeating what i have heard from other people who are experienced in keeping channa.
you cant be the one to say it is not true.
your opinion and experience has shown that they will kill. that doesnt make it true.
tokyo, i agree with you
