I went to the tractor supply today for some black diamond and and they have/black diamond makes 5 types which one should I get. The fish I would most likely keep would be african cichlid. The types they have are

40/80
30/60
20/40
12/40
12/30

which one should I get?

Most people I have read that use it use the 20/40 grain. Be careful with it though. I tried using it when I was just starting to set up my 125 and the stuff was awful. Oily residue, sharp jagged pieces that cut me and little silica sticks I couldn't remove from the rest of it. I know some people use it with great success. It seems to me that the sand quality varies based on either region shipping to your area or different batches produce different quality blasting material.

Moved to setup and filtration.

I'm quite interested to seee what comes of this as well. I'm planning to use black diamond in my 510 once I have it up and running. I'm somewhat concerned by the report of the silican and residue to be honest.

I've heard about this issue. I've either been lucky, or the Northeast gets better quality. I'm on my 8th or so bag across a few tanks and have never had an issue. Didn't require much rinsing to get rid of the dust. I've had a great experience with it. Just my $.02
