I am getting ready finally set up a 120G tank that I bought off craigslist and resealed. I have never owned a canister filter so need some suggestions on which canister would be best for a 120Gallon.

I have only used HOB filters (EMP 400) before so am new to the canister world. What would you do??

Thanks.

I had a single FX5 on my 120 and liked it. I don't overstock though. I am switching it out for two Eeheim 22117 canisters this month.

i think it all depends on how much youre going to spend I think there a thread somewhere on this site with comparisons on canisters if not you can always look on e bay and if youre thinking about getting a certain filter you tube it theres a good chance someone has posted a video with pros and cons on the more well known filters HTH Mike

I would think the same, with a little preference for the two 2217. I personlly own some 2217 and am very impressed by their biological efficiency. I don't know how they cost in the USA, but here in Canada they are sold for about 200 $, all medias included.

On the other hand, they do not do as good as FX5 on the mecanical level, even if using two of them (matter of gph).

FX5 imo,i have 2 and a AC110 on my 125 and love them.quicker to clean & easier than my eheim's.on amazon its $200 and media is $40.

Yeah I prefer FX5 for mech, anything Eheim for bio. If cost isn't as much of an issue the OP can always get the best of both worlds and roll with an Eheim 2262 .

I would do acouple Aquatop 500UV's. I am doing a couple on my 125g and water has never been cleaner or clearer. Good 4 stage filters with the UV sterilizer built in. For the price of one Fx5 you can get two of them. more circulation, water rotation, and overall coverage of your tank. You can get them from "Koi Enterprise".
