I have a 55 with a dying penn-plax 1200. I have about $150 I can spend.

Is it all about the GPH? Marineland sells one for up to 55g at 143 gph. The marineland for 60g is 220 gph, and the penn plax for a 100g is 265gph.

Does the GPH matter? What is the real criteria you use to determine which cannister to buy?

that would probably depend more so on what your tank is stocked with.. let us know that and im sure you would get a lot more suggestions. if youre not so partial to a canister filter, it seems a lot of ppl on here rave about the ac 110. priced at petco i think are aroudn 70-80 bucks.

I can't do a HOB due to my canopy, and I don't want the trouble of a sump. (I know, they're awesome.. but not on the 55 in my living room).

Its a cichlid grow-out tank. Current stock is a mish-mash,

4 red-fin tetras, they live in there full time.

Currently also living in harmony with the tetras:
3 1.5" Cobalt Zebras
4 1.5" Red Zebras
2 Yellow Labs, 1 @ 2" and 1 at 3" (about to graduate to the 110)
4 very small (2" tops) clown loaches.

I feed every other day, I do ~25% water changes every week.

yea xp2 is a good cannister... not sure how much eheim classics are going for but you can check those out.
