montreal
There is a pond at my parents house that is cement with a line it's about 1000g but only 22" deep so a large footprint I live in montreal Canada and need to know a few things as I have never owned a catfish and before I start to do my own research would like to be pointed in the right direction so

1) what filtration would I need for max 4 cats what is a cheap DIY alternative?
2) what cats out there could live in this climate ( if needed I could bring inside but would prefer not to considering the size I have out side)
3) other option is koi but I'm not extremely interested in that

You are going to need species that can tolerate coksl temps. What are your temp ranges winter and Summer. Filtration I would look at large pond filters like the ultimas. As far as catfish goes... North American species like flathead. Or a goonch would be cool. Can you post pics of this pond? Also check your local laws to make sure you can keep these cats.

Channel Catfish, Blue Catfish, Ameiurus sps., NA Flathead are all good options.

No go on tsn and goonch. Try something like bullheads or channel cats. A pike/pickeral would be cool too.

He lives in Canada, native fish is a no go legally. And that shallow and with winters we get I don't think anything will the survive the winter unheated. You would have to bring inside in the winter but really only thing I would say is koi or maybe a subtropical fish

You'd have to heat that and cover it in the winter as the pond has a lot of surface and is very shallow. Before doing that, I'd look at the cost to dig it deeper or building an enclosure around it. Even a temp enclosure like an insulated shed might be more cost effective than running heaters 24/7 for 1,000 G in 0F to 20F weather.

1) ground will be around 56F under the pond
2) wind will suck up a lot of heat, so any windbreak will be helpful
3) ambient temps will suck up heat

Any enclosure, even 2x4 with 1/4 plywood lined with 2 layers of 4mm plastic sheet will drastically cut heat loss and reduce the heating bill, but it's still costly.
