yeah because it is a darker base,... the polys will be a lighter tint, and be easier to see with a darker base

Hi.

Here in Japan 99% of Bichir enthusiasts use the following:

100% Crucshed Garnet stone / Quartz for Endlicheri, Congicus, Ansorgii Bichirs with a light base color with black markings. This will bring out the contrast making the marking seem to almost "pop".

100% Black sand for Bichir Bichir, Lapradei, and other Bichirs that are known for their "greenness". The black will bring out an amazing shade of green. Endlicheri etc kept on only black can suffer from becoming too dark, and often loose contrast where the black marking fades.

When we wish to have mixed tanks (Endlicheri, Bichir Bichir etc) we normally use 80% red crushed garnet mixed with 20% black sand.

Seems to level out nicely.

Very informative respond, thank you

What types of species are you looking?

I find that black sand brings out the best in upper jaws
and red/brown sand give lower jaws better contrast
