Just installed the canister and now I'm not sure what direction I should set the outflow to. Across the aquarium? Or just to the front? The fish I have is a trio of redbelly piranhas and a cariba piranha. Fluval 307 in 55gal.

I normally set up my filters length wise across the tank. Just as you’d set up a power head. I have an fx6 so one is pointed up at the surface for agitation.

Also I set up the intake at the opposite side but I do have a second filter picking up from the dead spot which is usually behind the outflow.

Just a quick thought, if you don’t have a power head I’d definitely get one... also get ready to upgrade the tank or cut back on the shoal.. 55gals are not very wide.

It’s a good tank to grow them out, it won’t take long for them grow and eventually they will need more room. Their aggression will rise and you’ll notice. A power head helps push water in one direction creating flow in the tank. once they grow they will need room and if they don’t have it they will start to pick each other off and not to mention your bio load will be to much for you fluval 307 to keep up with unless you plan on water changes every other day. The caribe will outgrow that tank on its own. I think they would need a 125gal minimum but that’s just me. I have a solo manueli in a 65 gal about to be put into a 180.

Oh ok? I just asked for the outflow question ?‍♂️

I agree with the others, because these are riverine fish, flow should be aimed along the length of the tank.
And I agree that the flow from a spray bar of a canister will be very wimpy for those fish, even in a tank as small as 55 gallons.
