So I finally have some fish that are going to be Large. They are currently in a 125 that is very well filitered. That aside I already have a larger tank planned. This time I'm going to have the setup decided long in advance. With this tank I am not going to use a Sump, just Canisters and HOB's.

I was chatting back and forth the other night with a guy that I considered to be very intelligent when it comes to systems. He felt that with filtration systems you are much better off going with a higher media volume and a lower turnover (say 4X or 5X) with the idea that this allows the water to have contact with the media for a longer period of time. I had always thought that a filter which may not hold as much media but has a very high GPH is better with a turnover of say 10X but these filters do not hold as much media.

So lets make this equal, all media is factory supplied and setup as recommended. Again no sump. Which is better the slower system with more media or the faster system with less media all other factors aside. Sorry I have taken so long to get to the question but I fealt there are so may factors I needed to explain the conversation.

Slower flow over bio Ive always heard was more effective. Where as you want higher turnover for mechanical. Since you want to do hob and canister i would use canister for bio and hob for mechanical. Or if you want to do all canister the marineland magnum 350 is awesome for water polishing/mechanical.
