which fancy plecos are the best algae eaters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not sure on how much algae it eats, but I've seen several L200 Green Phantom owners say they are the more active of their fancy plecos (during lights on). I haven't owned one though...

Be aware that plecos wont eat all algae that grows in your tank and there is a trade off for them eating what algae they do eat, And that is a large bio-load for the size of the fish. Plecos crap like crazy. BPags is right as far as an active pleco. Cannot go wrong with the L-200. Bristle-nose plecos do have a rep for cleaning up some algae also. If it is a community tank I would suggest otocinclus(sp?).

how many of this thread do we need

Good point. Maybe we need a well-written STICKY thread on the few effective algae-eating plecostomus species. It's a rampant question that needs to be adequately addressed.

:iagree:But to answer the question I have both a L200 and a calico bn and they are great house keepers. The L200 is fancier in my opinion but they are both lookers!!!

I can vouch for the calico BN being a good-looking algae-eating pleco as well. I can't personally offer input on any others.

L600 does not eat algae - not that i have seen it eat AND shreds sponges!!! But a very good looking pleco
