Hello guys,

I have always used W/D filtration but I am going to go in a new direction and buy a canister. I am purchasing a 130gal tank and am trying to choose between an FX5 or an Eheim 2080. I will inevitably overstock the tank as usual so I will need a big filter and unless I want to be divorced this is the biggest and only tank I will have. So thanks for your opinions.

I'd go with the FX5 for cost/flow reasons and then fill ALL the baskets with bio-material. The stock foam is more than enough mechanical filtration for your needs. Stay away from extra mechanical...especially 'polishing' pads. Once this beast is established the water will be crystal clear without any additional help. Don't let the early results confuse you they need a month or two to really establish a good 'slime' coating and start removing tiny particles.

The Eheim is a very nice cannister..don't get me wrong but overpriced IMO for what it does and not without it's own repair issues.

Thanks and never mind. I just read the other posts and in particular the review of the two. If I got both would that be too much for a 130 gallon?

Problems?

I run a dozen 404/405s with no problems at all. Have for years. The Renas on the other hand, besides bieng a more primitive and inconveniant design, tend to snap impellers and crack housings.
