Which filter should I use on my 120? A Rena XP3, a Fluvel1200 or two A/C 110?

Also what type of heater and how many watts should it be for this tank?

from that selection i'd do the Xp3, plus 1-2 Ac110's more filtration the better. and for heating i'd do 2-200 watt visi therm stealths

Two Fluval 405 can's backed up with a single Emporer 400. (this is all that will fit on the back of a euro braced 120 gallon tank. I also recomend a pair of hydro5's for added bio-filtration and safety.

K I'll get the Xp3 now and the 2 A/Cs in about a month then.

Personally, I wouldn't run any of the single filters you chose. I run a single big canister, and double HOB filters for most tanks. Backing that up with Hydro filters will help too. For heaters, I'm partial to Eheim/Ebo jagers.

Right now I can't afford anything abouve 150$ so I really can't get that big of a canister. I've never heard of HOB filters how much do they cost?

HOB means Hang on Back. AC 110 is HOB, and that is what I would recommend. Ditch the carbon and run twice the biomax.

Ok. Does carbon even do anything really? I got a HOB filter...I think it's a whisper or something and it has these cartridges that have polyester and carbon in them. Thing is I have to replace them do to how filthy the polyester gets so I was thinking of just putting more sponges in it instead of replaceing the cartridges. Would that make the filter more efficient?

if price is an issue then get one emporer 400 and two hydro5's your talking about less than 120.00 for enough filtration for a 500 gallon tank. I can show you a few upgrades to kick the 400 through the roof.
