I've had a really frustrating time trying to find a used acrylic tank on Craigslist for my midas. I'm starting to consider buying a new one, but I can't really decide which footprint I'd prefer. I thought I should get some input from fellow CA/SA keepers, so I'm posting a poll.

Keep in mind that this will be a solo tank for one midas. If you choose "other", please don't say anything smaller in size than 100g because I want to give him at least that much. Ideally, I'd love to get a 180g and make a large riparium with plants on the top, but that's not very realistic for me budget-wise ATM.

Long...I think it'd be easier to deal with territory and everything else with more length than it would with depth.

In the end though I suppose it depends largely on what you're planning to keep in the tank.

Edit: DOH...just saw that you said it for a solo midas.

I don't know anything about those fish. But I think as long as the shorter footprint can accommodate it without cramping the fish, then its a matter of preference on your part...Would you rather have more length for the type of decor you want? Or more space front to back for a little more depth in your aquascape/whathaveyou?

Personally I'd still go for the longer footprint, but I just like long tanks (granted, all I've had so far is a 3' 65g:p)

Long. 18" is wide enough for life and longer is more room for others to get away or to give him/her more swimming room.

Agreed!

single midas would probably enjoy the length to swim in more then the width but if you plan on getting any tank mates that will outgrow 18 inch you will need the turn around room and wish you would have gotten the 24 inch. if his tank now will house him for a bit longer i would try and wait around to find a good deal (here on MFK or c. list) on a 180 then you could have the best of both worlds and it would most likely be the last tank you would have to purchase for a long time to come. i mean their are plenty of fish that will outgrow a 180 but your selection gets really broad with that foot print. whatever you decide good luck and happy fish keeping

Nuff said. Go with this for your Midas. You'll both be happy.

i like more open space over length... i guess im the only one.....

If you hve the room for a tank that is 60" long and a tank that 24" wide then why not get a 60x24x24"?

The 48 inch tank is larger....a 120 vs. a 100. I prefer the depth for larger fish!

I'd much rather go larger, and a 6x24x24 would be great, but it's a couple hundred dollars more just to increase the tank size, not to mention the stand.

Thank you all for your opinions. I've been keeping an eye out on all the Craigslists for my region. Every once in a while a used acrylic setup comes along, but they're usually really overpriced or sell immediately before I can catch them. My midas is 3.5" now, and he's in a 40g breeder. Hopefully by Christmas I can either find a used setup or suck it up and order a new one.
