If there are 2 GATFs to choose from and you can have only one:

1. A 13" with silvery body. Very thick. Eats a lot. Grow fast but has damaged snout that front teeth are missing. Kinda jumpy sometimes. Have almost no yellow sheen and has damaged spinal/ pectoral fins. Has big U-shaped anal fin.

He looks kinda like this but smaller:

2. A 12.5" with silver bronze body. Not very thick. Eat sometimes. Grow at medium rate. Has perfect snout and teeth. Very calm. Have yellow sheen and perfect fins. Have normal size V-shaped anal fin.

He looks kinda like this but smaller:

So... what would you choose between 1 and 2?

I think I have the worst of both worlds lol. My guys growth is like that of #2 AND he’s very skittish. So has developed a short snout over the years. Still has the front teeth though. So I got that going for me which is nice.

Wow. #2 just got overwhelming votes compared to #1. Is this variant a preferred type for GATF? Like Asian Arowana? Or the fact that it's calm/ have perfect snout?

I'm starting to think they came from different area though. Fleshy lips/ big fins/ big fangs/ silver bronze body. Any special/rare morphs out there that's sought after by aquarists?

Well who doesn't like a nice looking specimen? And also one that isn't scared of you? And the growth is more manageable for the average person. Someone like vince or tbtb might want #1

#2 for sure if plan to keep in anything less than 10,000 gal

Per Chicxulub's stickie, there appear to exist certain GATF variants which are however poorly understood and ill defined. IMHO, nothing definitive can be said about them except something called "black" GATF.

Don't think anyone has noticed any difference between regular and black gatf as far as growth or size. Chicx raised a regular gatf in black water and it began darkening. We only see large black gatf which are found in water with a lot of tanins etc. so the black gatf as of now isn't anything separate from regular.
