Picked this up at a local fish store. Was labeled as a Geophagus surinamensis but I highly doubt it is. Which species of the Geophagus is it? I was thinking heckelii? Please help. I have him in a 30 gallon with a 3" ebjd and some very small barbs. Here's some pics of him.

Humm was thinking it was either or. I have a alfatron that's about 4" atm and looked nothing like this one. Maybe someone could give me more insight on this.

Yup. Probably not the best with the EBJD. Gymnos are subtropical and do best with a winter cool-down period. They are nice though, and quite mild-mannered.

Kind of looks like the one in that pic without the red cause it's still a juvie but does have the markings on the face. I do know about the gymnos. I owned a brazillas about year ago. Had it in my 240 gallon. Was healthy and eating. 6 months later... One day it was dead. No fish bites or anything. Just dead. After the fact I bought 3 months later people were telling me that they have to have a cool down period but can live in the 75-82 degrees. Wonder if I should take it back? I bought it on Friday. He doesn't bully my ebjd. Actually my ebjd bullies him during feeding time. The gymno does eat pellets and is healthy. Or do you guys think it will be like my last gymnos, 6 months down the road I'll find it dead?

Thanks all for the clarification.
