Just some mixes I've been thinking about...please let me know if they're compatible and pick which one you think would be the best

55g tank

-2 convicts, 2 firemouths, 1JD, and maybe 1 bristlenose pleco
-2 convicts, 1 oscar
-2 convicts, 1 red devil
-2 convicts, 1 green terror

And maybe stick a firemouth/pleco in the last 3 if it's not already overcrowded.

New suggestions welcome, hopefully Petco sells them :D

go with the oscar, i have one in a 55 and hes got great personality. some people will tell you that a 55 is too smallfor an O, but with good filtration and water changes it will work great

If you want a pair of cons in a 55 they will be a pain in the ***. Two Males will work. Firemouths are mostly all show no go and not on my favorates list. An Oscar will out grow a 55 long term and crap like cows. The GT is a nice fish for a 55 but the male cons will probable beat the crap out of him if they are the same size, cons are really tough SOB's. Red Devil is nice but also gets big for in a 55. So here's my suggestion two female cons and slightly larger male GT. Get the pleco too.

Usually Convicts just attack when defending territory/fry. Convicts dont just walk straight into another fish for no reason, my opinion Convicts are the smartest cichlids there are.

I would go with an all male tank. 2 male cons and 2 male FM's.

I think Cons are great fish, but you never saw a convict relentlessly chase other fish? Some are down right nasty and in a 55 how big is there percived territory? The bigger the con the bigger chunk of tank it wants. I have one male about 3.5 inches small hump I took out of a 55 because it was killing a GT same size. If it just looked at it the chase was on. I've had many and they all spit fire. Two females are much more mellow and will spend most of the time bickering with each other.

-2 convicts, 2 firemouths, 1JD, and maybe 1 bristlenose pleco <too much for a 55....leave out the dempsey and make the others all male and it might work>
-2 convicts, 1 oscar <oscar will grow too large for a 55>
-2 convicts, 1 red devil <red devil will grow too large and most likely grow up and kill the 2 cons assuming they don't kill the RD before it hits maturity>
-2 convicts, 1 green terror <again, too much for a 55 long term imo due to the adult size of a GT>

And maybe stick a firemouth/pleco in the last 3 if it's not already overcrowded.

this idea probably is the best that's been suggested so far...add some swordtails as dithers :)
