The play sand grain size from Home Depot is finer than the pool filter sand. I bought both type of sands and end up using pool filter sand instead of, play sand.

The grain size on Pool Filter sand is regulated... meaning all particles are bigger than X & smaller then Y... This is required for the Sand to properly perform as Pool Filter media... This is why PFS really doesn't have any fines and therefore washes very easily.

Play Sand and Leveling Sand can be whatever size the manufacturer desides... and the range of particle sizes will also vary greatly...

I bought 50lbs from Leslie Pools for about 9 bucks. Almost didn't even need to rinse (almost)

Shouldn't cost much more than that for regular pool filter sand.
