I hear people saying dovii's are meaner, umbee's are meaner. Umbee's get bigger, dovii's get bigger. I also hear Umbee has more personality, dovii's have more personality and ect. I want to know the truth which of the two are a better fish overall? I know this is all opinion but that is why I made this thread. I want to see what you guys think. To be honest I never owned an umbee only a couple dovii's. My LFS is getting some umbee's in in a month or two and I really want one. I will be buying a 180 gallon tank and I want to put one big cichlid in it. A dovii or an umbee. They will be Solo too.

I'd say it depends on the personality and the preference of it's keeper, the setup it is in, the food it eats. though I have never owned either I assume they look different and if they do then that is another personal preference thing, from what I have seen in searches I like doviis

I have only owned one dovi but I currentley own 20 or so F1 rio Magdelena Blue Umbee ( I bought from jason aka freshwaterpredators on this forum )
and from my experience my dovii seemed to be more shy for some reason

but each fish no matter the species has his/her own personality .

but out of the 2 species dovi or umbee I will choose the umbee personally, their personality, look to me are second to none ( in my opinion )

I may be mistaken but I do think dovii max out a couple inches bigger then umbee

Regarding the size (according to fishing-worldrecords.com):

Biggest Umbee ever caught was 10 lb and 8 oz, 24" inches in length. Caught in Rio Yanacue, Colombia by Alejandro Linares:

Biggest Dovii was 12 lb and 8 oz, 26" in length. Caught in Lake Apanas, Nicaragua by Antonio Altamirano:

I've never owned a Dovii nor do I want to... but the Umbee I have is a really cool fish. Just really shy because he's still small.

I have both, I don't know if I could say I like one over the other more. I'll give some point about both though.

My Umbee came around much sooner then my Dovii. The Umbee was in my face flaring and whipping at me at around 6" or so.

The Dovii was skittish for a lot longer so it takes more patients.

The Umbee swims a lot more. Seems to interact with me a little more then just attacking me like my Dovii.

Love the trailers on my Umbee and he only looks better and better and far as color and fins with age.

Dovii has great color and is a nut.

Both are always aware of what is going on in the room and quick to investigate it. Both think there tank and space around it is there's.

Umbee had balls at 7" when tank cleaning took place attacking the python early on.

I like having them both. A 180 is to small for the life of either male but good for a few years. Umbee will need more room to swim in the long run. I know Mel O a member here measured his Umbee at 24" and his Dovii is around the same. He gives great care and has large tanks to properly house both. Most think 20" or under is what they will attain most often.......I think it's due to water conditions and tank size.

Don't worry I will upgrade when the cichlid gets too big for the 180.. I might get 240 instead but still researching

I was just giving you my opinion. If you can go with the 240 that would be best. A 6x30" would be a good starter tank.
