I just purchased a eheim professional 3 2080 and a 110 gallon tank. I am ready to start setting the tank up and need to know which media to use. I know I need EHFIMECH and EHFISUBSTRAT PRO but what should I put in the 3rd chamber, carbon? They make a carbon pad for this unit. Would I be ok using carbon "chunks"? Thanks in advance,
-Matt

i just use the mech and substrat. mech in the lowest basket and substrat in the other 2. this will give you a good biohome. you can add some carbon to the highest basket if you like, just dont forget to put it in a sock or something. i wudnt expect too much of the carbon filterpad.

I'd skip the carbon pad. You'll have to change it more often that just normal maintenance withou it. Does that make sense? :screwy:

Eheim recommends mech in the bottom basket and substrat in the top 2 baskets. The bottom basket is normally topped by the blue pad, under the handle. The top basket topped by a white pad, over that handle.

Eheim only recommends carbon on a new tank or when you're trying to remove meds. If you plan to use carbon, buy good quality activated carbon in either coated milk box cartons, hard plastic or glass jars. If you don't use ALL of the purchase initially, store the remainder in a tightly closed glass jar.

BTW, Eheim has a website.

This is no longer the case with the Pro 3. That is the old ways. in the pro 3 it is above the substrat pro.

Congrats on a great filter. I have one on my 150, and it is amazing. Quiet and powerful. I would use the one ehfi mech on the bottom tray, and 2 substrat pros. Let us all know how it goes.

That'll teach me to read the headline more than once. I was thinking of the 2228 and 2028 and wasn't aware of the pro3. According to Eheim's site it's not available until Oct 15th, 2006. I looked for their recommendations for media but couldn't find it on the site. I'll have to go by HMI and see what the specs and media used are. I'll post what I find out if I can find this thread again.

Is there a way to track threads?

Howdy,

mine is filled with EhfiMech (bottom) and EhfiSubstratPro (other 2 baskets).

However, I strongly recommend to fill 1-1.5'' of the middle basket with regular filter floss. The Eheim pads do not sufficiently hold back particles. Filter wool is a cheap and easy fix to that problem. Besides that, great filter

Okay, I went by Hawaiian Marine Imports today(www.hawaiianmarine.com) and checked on the 2080. The pump output is 1500l or 449gph(US) according to their literature. As far as the media goes, they sell a media kit. they recommend 4 liters of efimech and 8 liters of efisubstrat pro. For those unfamiliar with efisubstratpro it looks like kix cereal. because it's round it doesn't restrict the flow as much as efisubstrat did. It also doesn't collect as much debris.

When comparing the 2080 to the 2260, I STILL prefer the 2260. the output is rated at 635 gph (US) and the media chamber is 1.5Xs the size of the 2080. IMO, the workhorse of the entire line remains the 2217 classic. Unless your situation requires monster filters, multiple 2217s are probably a better value and choice.

There's a pre-filter tray. I've always complained about Fluvals and the fact that dirty water can bypass the media and return to the tank. It would appear, to me anyway, that Eheim is now doing the same thing. Like the Liberty hang-on-the-backs and the Ecco filter line, despite the praises the 2080 has received here, my inclination is to say the 2080 is a step backward in style and performance, as well as the class previously offered by ALL Eheim products. If you owned a Mercedes dealership and wanted to add another car product would it be a Yugo? As a dealer, I refused to stock Eccos or Libertys.

BTW, from what I can figure, a retail price point for a 2080 should be around $600 USD. Eheim North America has pretty much destroyed the tier structure for distributors and dealers, selling direct to almost anyone. If I were a dealer now, (I'm not) I'd have to reconsider any stocking level of Eheim products. Previously, because there WAS a tier structure, I could have matched a mail-order offer in most cases with no loss or sweetened an offer by making the unit complete with media, allowing me to make a few bucks.

I've never been one to promote an entire product line. Eheim, until the last few years had been one of the exceptions.
