Just bought a used wet/dry filter and came with a mixture of these bio-balls. The media compartment is only half filled, i plan to fill it all the way up. What kind of bio-balls should i order more of? which ones should i remove? the quarter is for size reference. thanks

One to the Left looks lik it has the most surface area

left will be the most effective one

Don't bother adding any more bio balls !

Try an add high efficient high surface area media. Seachem pond matrix is good alternative to bio balls.

^^what he said.

I prefer bioballs in a W/D system.

Ceramic medias like Matrix are too small and would block of water pathes. In the Dry compartment, water takes the path of least resistance. hence places where those media buddled up together would remain dry and useless.

That is purely a setup issue !

A properly done drip tray, or spinning spray bay eliminates issues like this.

Matrix / Pond matrix is not ceramic media ! It a pumice based material which has highly efficient pore structure allowing bb to colonize the entire surface area inside and outside of the media. It is even able to colonize anaerobic bacteria inside the internal pore areas of the media when conditions are favorable. Matrix will not block water paths in a sump, that is pure fiction !

Bioballs above water, ceramic media or other high surface area stuff for submerged.

I'm intreested people are saying the one on the left is better, I've used both sizes and I'd go for the smaller one second on the left as they nest better and you can fit more surface area into the chamber.

! agree second one w submerged matrix would give great surfasce thats what I use and the water is pristine, Biballs in trickle fashion w submerged matrix and ehfisubstrat on all my tanks, never an issue
