Here's the deal,my Juruense cat was severely bitten up by my knife fish so I moved him to a hospital tank to heal. There was no real damage to the body, mostly fin damage and the tail is bitten pretty far down but I think it can grow back so I have been treating the water with MelaFix,he is still eating normally. It has been a few days in this tank and now I notice little white ich like spots on the body. This needs to be treated but I was not sure what to use so I need some advice. Thanks all.

You can add salt and bump the temp to 82-86. Make sure and add aeration, as increased temperatures have lower dissolved oxygen.

Thanks, the tank has a hang on power filter with no carbon.Do you think the return water flow provides enough oxygen or not?

It might be suitable for normal use, but the meds and higher temps will remove a lot of the oxygen when treating, so using a little more airation in these times is always helpful..

Right,I've never had to treat a catfish before but have heard that they dont take to meds well so I am just worried about making matters worse. Thanks for the input.

I have found that salt and higher temps is the safest way to go. Especially since you dont have to remove the carbon from the filters. But if you have to use meds then i would use melafix or pimafix they work really well and arent as strong as some of the copper based meds.

The fins are healing nicely, they just have to grow out to their original length now. Thanks everyone.

Which do these meds work best against? Those do not work well for ich. Salt is still the safest treatment. Meds are best used as last resorts.

I already knew what the MelaFix was intended for and that it was of no real use against ich.I have always used it for healing wounds as well as salt.
