I got my 30gallon tank, It will most likly house my growing cichlids b/c I love them and I keep buying them so I take extra tanks and use them as growing tanks.. so I was thinking all my tanks use gravel, live plants and fake plants and it's getting old you think I should do maybe sand with a few river rocks or maybe crushed coral (as high pH isnt a huge prob. for my fish) with a few clay pots or some rocks?? what do you think?? Its my fun tank!

I like the sand and rock idea. It's nice to have a varity of different styles of tanks.

I use crushed coral, and I have to say I'm not a big fan. :(

Floursecnt pink gravel, ceramic castles and skulls, glow in the dark plants..

Oh...and one of those treasure chests that open and shut with bubbles

And the spongebob charecters too.... That would be really cool!!!!!

:headbang2 :D

Nothing says subtrate, like your mom's crushed fine china plate....ha

Florecent gravel always adds a spark of excitement, clay pots would be cool as long as your fish would be able to fit in them.
Or if you use sand, make it like a desert theme, with all skulls and a fake cactus in there, you'd get the best of both extreme wet and extreme dry worlds.

I used to have a picture of a god awfull aquarium with flourescent gravel, plants, castels, bubbles comming from every where, action orniments, painted glass fish, all kinds of hidiousness with a large print caption "this is everything an aquarium should never be". I had it hanging in my shop.

I could all ways tell the people who owned a tank like this from their expression on thier face when they read the poster. :D

Howdy,

Sand and Rocks rock! :headbang2 ( I love mine)

Regarding the crushed coral, I am rather sceptical. After all, it's a freshwater tank. It won't affect your fish with regard to pH and hardness, if these cichlids are from Africa (Tanganyika, Malawi). I still wouldn't do it, though. Coral stuff is for saltwater, in my mind. I like natural habitats better, but that's a personal preference.

Have fun diversifying your tank setups!

i wouldn't use crushed coral. it gets dirty very quickly
so unless your going to pull all of the crushed coral out every month
and scrub it down, stay away from it ;)
