So in my other thread i talked about how i was going for the ultimate cichlid tank with festeas, grammodes, trimac, lyonsi, cuban, and istlanum. But after thinking about it i may get more pleasure out of a pair tank. Which would you rather have as a pair and why. I have reasons for each fish why i would keep each but i may only got with one

Festeas- pros- nothing beats a festea pair with the colors
cons- festeas are now flooding the hobby and i think are losing their rarity.

Cubans-pros- never see them where i live, and they just look cool
cons-females not as good lokking as males

lyonsi-pros-rare fish and i would put money on it that im the only one besides my friend who has one in Albany NY. May be able to squeeze a grammodes in there with them
cons- cant find any

istlanum-pros- new fish to me
cons- got none

grammodes-pros- ITS THE MINI DOVII!!! Great colors lots of attitude, and makes a good wet pet when larger.
cons- again i got nothing

Trimac-pros-very good wet pet. Great colors and lots of spunk
cons- not enough experience with them to know any

I will keep my single grammodes in his own tank no matter what...

Well im partial to the cubans. Speaking from my own experience, cubans seem to bond very strongly. There is almost no domestic abuse and they get along great. I disagree about the females being dull. I love the bold black markings of my female and she even has hints of blue on her dorsal and anal fins. Although i will say i have always wanted a pair of lyonsi. You might find that they are not the easiest fish to breed. Some people have instant luck and some people go years without anything. i guess it just depends.

I know I am going to get grilled for this but i don't find grammodes all that appealing. Maybe because I have never seen an adult specimen but there are much better looking parachromis out there.

Festae, trimacs, and islatum are all gorgeous fish and I think a pair of either would be stunning but these guys all like to beat the hell out of their partners. Getting a compatible pair might prove difficult. All three species are stunning but I see festae ALL the time now and seems like everyone has them. Stunning fish just pretty darn common. To combat aggression you could use anubisscott's flowerpot method. It seemed to work great for his midas.

IMO I would go with either the cuban, trimacs, or the festae. But that is just my personal opinion. If this is the same 150 I am sure a pair of either species will be happy.

ive never seen an adult grammodes which is why i wont sell mine as he is only 3 inches and follows me every where. I agrees with the festeas. I bought mine when a craze started and im over it

Whassup, man... hope you don't mind me making some comments on what you said, then posting what I'd like. So, here we go...

IN MY OPINION, RARITY SHOULDN'T BE A QUALIFIER. IF YOU LIKE HOW THE FISH LOOKS, GO FOR IT... AND IGNORE HOW RARE OR COMMON IT IS. AND FLOODING THE HOBBY OR NOT, FEMALES WITH ANY SIZE TO THEM, ARE STILL VERY DIFFICULT TO GET. EVIDENCED BY MY FAILURE TO ACQUIRE ONE SINCE MY INITIAL INTEREST THIS PAST JANUARY! LOL...

NOT SURE WHAT PART OF NY YOU LIVE IN, BUT IRA LIVES IN NY, AND IRA HAS THIS FISH. YOU SHOULD HIT HIM UP. I CAN GIVE YOU HIS PHONE NUMBER, IF INTERESTED. I GOT MY LYONSI PAIR FROM HIM.

istlanum-pros- new fish to me
cons- got none

grammodes-pros- ITS THE MINI DOVII!!! Great colors lots of attitude, and makes a good wet pet when larger.

Now, obviously, anyone who knows me maybe a little on this forum knows if I had my way, I'd have a festae pair, of all pairs! LOL... but I think a trimac pair would also be awfully tempting!

Good luck with whatever you come up with, man! Be looking forward to see how it all shakes out.

talked to the wife and she likes the lyonsi, trimac, and grammodes. she wants to see adult pics when she gets home so she can throw in her 2 cents

You should do something we don't have a lot of in this area like the Trimac cuz you said your Keeping the Grammode no matter what thats what i would do. I am gonna go witht he Cubans cuz who really has them around here no one really

I have it narrowed down to the istlanum, trimac, and lyonsi. I'm gonna keep the grammodes in his own tank

Can only speak about the Lyonsi, only fish on this list I've kept as a pair. Easy going, dont get huge so you dont have to go with a Monster tank and worry about a bunch of abuse. And still a rare fish, comparatively speaking.
