So, if I were to set up a 75 gallon predator tank, which pickerel species would I be best getting? Grass, redfin, or chain? Sorry if I've been making too many threads lately.
I just recieved my first pickerel (Redfin) so I don't have much experience with them in captivity, but I've caught chain and grass pickerel while fishing and chain pickerels would easily outgrow a 75 gal tank. Most I caught were between 14-22" and they can get bigger, whereas grass and redfin (from what I've read) usually stay under 14".
Around here Redfins live in black water, they are generally smaller and more colorful than most populations. If you can't get redfins the best would be grass pickerel.
I remember as a kid in WV looking down on little creeks in the middle of the summer when it hadn't rained in quite a while seeing big Muskies in little holes of water barely big enough for them to turn around in.
Pikes are very cool fishes, good luck with yours...
Redfin in a 75, my grass pickerel were pushing 11-12" when they passed on me, and for a torpedo of a fish that can have episodes of absolute insanity, the smaller species is best in a small tank.
