So I want a nice large pleco but I have a dilemma. Not only do I have a 3D background, I have rays. Am I out of luck?

They will over time destroy that foam background, also it could kill the pleco too. IMO I think you should start with a larger common so the stingray wont have a chance to eat him and if he stars destroying your background you can get rid of him and you are not out of a lot of money.

Good luck

Im in the middle of the same problem, except for the rays, don't have any of those. The solution is carnivorous Plecos, they won't chew up the background. Try and get a big one, so you Wont have a problem with the ray.

What about hot gluing some large stones/pieces of slate to the lower third of the background? Since these fish stay near the bottom, no need to cover the entire 3D background? Also, maybe the glued stone will give a more realistic appearance.

I originally wanted a Panaque since they chew on wood and not prone to sucking onto the rays discs - this then caused an issue with the 3D BG. However I have 3 large pieces of driftwood in this 600 so do you think this would deter it from munching on the BG?

If I go carnivorous, then the pleco is more prone to suck on the rays disc.

In the end I suppose it's not worth it although a nice Royal would look sweet in there. Bummer

I've been wondering this lately too... is there any small plecos that would qualify?

my ray is not that large (hystrix) so I doubt he would eat the pleco. more concerned with the pleco sucking on the ray or background.

I think carnivorus plecos will destroy backgrounds. I had an 11 inch L-114 that destroyed 2 sponge filters. So I think a background would be fair game also.
