I made a thread a few days ago asking about tank dimensions for a Fahaka Puffer, and after reading the responses I wouldn't realistically be able to get my hands on a tank this size anytime soon (big tanks in my area are crazy expensive).

So, now I'm looking for a puffer that would fit what tank size I have or could fairly easily get. I can find 75s in my area for a decent price if I wait and then snag it that same day. Or I have a spare 40g breeder with a built in corner overflow sitting in my garage right now - just needs a sump.

What I want from a puffer is basically like a mini Fahaka - personality, diet and owner responsiveness. I like the idea of having a different diet from the fish I have or have had in the past (which has been cichlids). As far as looks - again a mini fahaka - interesting patterns and just a nice looking puffer.

Anyone know of one that would be right for me?

If you are interested in brackish water, a 75gal would be good for a figure-8 puffer or leopard puffer

Thanks for bringing that up, I would prefer to stay fresh water but I have had saltwater tanks in the past but would want to stick with the 40g breeder if I went brakish/marine. That would save me some $$$ to purchase the equipment needed for that kind of setup.

For the 40gal your additional cost would just be for salt and a hydrometer. Not that much actually.

Skimmer (do brackish need these?) and several koralia pumps. But I really would prefer to stay FW.

a figuer 8 puff will do fine in a 40g and do fine in fresh water. For mine I went a bought a small box of salt and i put a tsp of it for every 10 gallons so it has a lil salt and i have had it forever but iv seen one live a full life in completely fresh.
