I've never had to heat or filter a 125 gallon tank. So I dont know which would work the best for the tank. Any suggestions on which filter to go with and which heater to use?

Right now looks like I will have some cichlids, tetras, gourami, pleco, angels, and barbs. Also I plant to heavily plant the tank.
There are many ways you could do this. A single 300w heater will be fine for the tank.
As far as filtering, you will need to choose to go canister or W/D system. I much prefer canisters, but will likely try a W/D in a 135g I need to get setup quickly.
Of course an FX5 would be great and handle the system, but there are tons of canister filters out that can do the same job for half the price. You could even go with 2 canisters from let's say..... ViaAqua or the less known brands and build in yourself some redundancy.
