I picked up this filter at an extremely nice price. http://www.sunterrausa.com/filtration/product/300106

Not sure if this is the exact model though because the one I got says recommended pump size of 450 GPH. I can't find one on the site smaller than this though.

So basically it is the same design. Except the GPH I'm aiming for in a pump is 450.

My options are as follows.

I can get the mag drive at exactly 450 GPH.

The other pump is 12 to 20 dollars cheaper. But the GPH is 500 and 350.

So, should I get the right GPH for the higher price...

Or do I go cheaper... If I go cheaper, which route do I take...
100 less GPH or 50 more GPH.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Go bigger, always. That rating is usually at a head height of 0 feet. You will need to pump your water up to your tank, that is probably 4' or higher, reducing yur pumps flow considerably. Go with a 500 or bigger to achieve your desired flow at the filter. Also check the pumps specs, usually on the box it comes in, they give you the pumps performance numbers and usually give you multiple flow rates depending on your pumping height(head height).

Also take into account that you will need to cover the pumps inlet with something, if that is a coarse sponge prefilter, then plan on at least a 600gph pump with a flow control valve of some sorts. It's easier to slow down flow than it is to get more!

Good advice. I just didn't wanna have too much and break something. This is my first time dealing with specific GPH. Go big or go home. Got it.

Just install a plastic ball valve in the pumps output plumbing to adjust the flow. That's how my 900gph pond pump is set up off of my sump.
