I am interested in getting a ray and would like some experienced opinions about where to start. My tank is 110 gallons and substrate is pool filter sand. Tankmates are 10" pleco, 6" pictus cat, 8" sun cat, 4" silver dollars, 8" ID shark, 8" tinfoil barb. Any suggestions on what type would work best with my current setup?

YOur tank is to small for life you need to get rid of that plec prbly but motoros or black rays are very hardy

Get rid of the pleco, ID shark, and tinfoil barb (to reduce bio-load) and get your self a healthy male motoro pup. From a pup of 4-5" you should be able to get a good 12-18 months out of your tank. If you cant upgrade by then, you shouldnt have a problem selling a mature ray to get a new younger one.

I agree tank is too small for life. Instead of trying to make your tank work for awhile put the time towards setting up a new tank for your ray, in the long run you and your ray will be happier. This comes from the experience of being inexperienced.

I don't think you are really ready for a ray.... the book freshwater stingrays by Dr Richard Ross is a good start..... the pleco is a bad idea and as jd7 62 said others should be thinned for bio load..... a 180(6x2x2) will be a better tank for a ray.... but a motoro will be the best starter ray.....
