I was looking on Amazon for a Remora and they had a few types listed. Drain valve, Maxi-Jet 1200 and units with both. Which one do I need?

The Pro version is rated for a bigger tank and thus a bigger and better skimmer, but the straight Remora is good too. They only make those 2 models, they just come with/without drain valves, pumps, etc. Maxijet 1200 is the standard pump for the Remora.

Do i need a drain valve? It'll be going on my 30... Also my boss is going to get one for his 55g so he asked me as well.

No you do not. The valve is so that the collection cup won't overflow. It will flow into a bigger container you attach. You should be cleaning your collection cup every couple days anyway, so you shouldn't have to worry about overflowing the cup.

Hi,
I have a Remora Pro on my 65 gal. It is easy to operate. After breaking in, the collection cup doesn't fill that fast. Also, if get a drain valve have to empty where you are draining to anyways.

unless you skimming wet then no collection cup is needed. Skimming wet can happen even after breaking in due to the addition of certain foods, meds etc. You can also add a drain valve down the road if you feel you need to. Id just recommend checking the cup every day to make sure that it wont over flow, and empty and clean the cup every few days. other then that your alright.

Good point.

I got the drain valve...with the pro version...maxijet pump. I think that is the best combo...the overflow thing supposedly increases performance...and it also has some room to throw in some media or something else if you wanted to...but I dont know if it is really worth the $30
