What rocks are safe for goldfish? I have 2 fantails and there is a creek behind my house so I was wondering if I could use rocks from there.:)

I'd say look over the rocks carefully, because i had put some rocks in my 90 Gal that i got from outside and they all leached iron causing my red algae to BLOOM BADLY, i tried slate, granite, you name it they all leached iron, the telltale signs are rust colored veins forming if not fomed on the rock.........then from there you'll notice brown spots on the glass which is the iron building up. I live in Massachusetts so this might have something to do with it,Geology wise i ,mean.

get the rocks, boil them for a while to get rid of any toxins, parasites, etc. But before putting them in your tank, use a pipette to drip a drop of vinegar onto each one. The ones that fizz are not good for aquariums unless you have an african cichlid tank

Maybe I should add that I also have 2 otocinclus catfish in the tank with them to eat up some algae.;)

No no no no no,you wont like this kind of algae,it's red, grows in putrid mats, and looks toxic, but if not.........then your oto's will love it,but wait till you see the kinda blooms x-tra iron in those doses will make,i didnt like 'em and i love grren algae (well my fish do:) )

I didn't mean it like that, I didn't know if the two catfish would make a difference with the rocks!!:D

Dont add fish to clean your tank, it doesnt help.

Step one, gather your rocks. dont use any "soft" rocks like pumice, limestone, shale or anything you can sctartch with a nail. Step two, scrub the crap out of the stones under running tap water with an abrasive pad. Step three, boil the rocks for a few hours to kill any micro organisms that could be living in the pores or cracks, than add your rocks.

The reason I say dont add fish to clean your tank is because fish eat, than they crap. Poop is bad for your tank, it raises your ammonia and causes your tank to need cleaning moreoften. as all you have is a 20g hi ammonia spikes can happen very easily. Your tank is fully stocked now. If you realy want to add ONE more fish get a cory cat or something else that stays SMALL and at the BOTTOM. even better yet those blind cave catfish.

If you want PM me and I will give you some tank cleaning tips
