First off I want to say that I got this Rotkeil from my LPS. He was in the tank with five or six green big 7 inch Severums and a big Oscar about 10 inches. Anyhow, I always look at the tank when I go there, then I saw a different Severum there and he looked pretty tore up. I noticed he was different with a red shoulder and a light blue face. I was thinking he was a Rotkeil, then I asked the guy who worked there how much it was and he said it was 40 and I asked the manager to give it for me for 20 and he did. Then I picked him up and brought him home.

Anyhow, he's in my tank now. He's about 4-5 inches. It seems like he's not coloring up. I don't know why because he's the dominant biggest one. I'm thinking he needs a female in order to color up. I'm just wondering if it's a red head Rotkeil or not or what kind of Rotkeil is he ?

Thus is a picture is of him:

This is a picture of what I think he may be.

I thought it could be this one though.

If it's the blue face one then I already have 6 but don't mind having one more.

If you could help me and let me know which one it is, I'd glady appreciate it.

Thanks.

there is only one type of rotkeil. what yours colors up to be depends on it genetics. usually F0 or F1s will have more color than some random fry down the road. males will be more like the one on top because of the squiggly lines on the face

Dude less than thirty minutes from your first post. Patience.

The fish in the photo...the one you brought back...just looks to be a little stressed. Give it time. If it's healthy is will color up. A good deal of the Rotkeil's coloration depends on diet.

i have some F1 but the are still small only 1 1/2" right now. he is the only one thats big. he in the tank with 7 Geo Altifons, 3 Geo Red Heads and 6 Rotkeil 1 1/2".

i was about to say it does look female to me too. rotkeils can take some time to show the lines on their faces but by that size you should be seeing some

I'm thinking it is just a not so colourful specimen.

Here is a pic of one of my males....
