ok, so which FRESHWATER species lives in the nicest aquariums? It must be freshwater and you cant just say cichlids or oddballs. i know that most of what would be considered a "great" tank has multiple species, but in your opinion, which species is found more commonly in nicer tanks? By nicest tanks, I mean, overall space for the fish, filtration, money spent on the tank etc...

IMO, I'd say puffers, but I am bias. LOL. I love community setups as well as the variety of fish is very fascinating, but I stick to the puffer. MY fahaka is in his own 150 g tank & he roams freely with the setup just for him.

Rays or cichla, just off the top of my head.

rays and pbass were my first thought as well, but I would definitely lean more towards rays.

discus, i say so because most are housed in planted tanks and planted tanks really look good.

this is what i was thinkin too. obviously, the cost of the fish plays a huge part in it. all tanks that have dats in em that i have seen have been nice setups too. i think those who keep pbass and know what they are doing are all in nice tanks.

This isn't necessarily true either. You can have plenty of filtration and dump thousands into your tank, but that isn't a sign of whether or not you know what your doing. It is just a sign of how much you are will to throw at the hobby. Some of the cheapest and simplest setups are backed by the most knowledge and experience. Not saying that a lot of the cichla owners don't know what they are doing, there are a lot of very knowledgeable cichla keepers, just not sure if I would make that broad of a statement.

I think that there is a correlation of nice tanks to the "flavor of the month" as well.

How about Platinum and Golden Barras?

most cichlas rays and aro tanks i see here in asia are bare bottom tanks (including mine) and i don't see any beauty in it. the fishes themselves are absolute beauties but the tanks are kept bare bottom for maintenance purposes.
