I will be buying a tank to replace my existing 48x18x18 with 8mm glass and 10mm base. The reason why I am replacing it is because it is heavily pitted and scratched.

I have 2 options:

1. 48x18x18 with 6mm glass for $120

or

2. 48x18x21 with 8mm glass for $220

Is it worth the extra money to get the thicker glass and larger tank? Is 6mm glass really strong enough for a tank that size?

Cheers Cam

I would go with the 48x18x18. The other tank is only taller which doesn't really help you much and is most likely why the tank has thicker glass. Also thicker glass means its heavier and harder to move. IMO not worth the extra $100. Also 6mm is standard 75 gallon tank glass thickness and that will be fine.

I have always liked shallower tanks. I had a 75g and loved it. I planned on upgrading to a 125g but found an amazing deal on a 150g(same footprint just taller). I ended up purchasing the 150 and have to admit, the taller tank looks amazing. In the end I would get the 75g for money purposes, but if an extra 100$ won't hurt you, the 90g will present your fish better imo.
