Wanted to get some different views from the general crowd here at MFK, and try to get some insight on making a decision for my first tank. Yes my first tank will be a monster tank, but I have been planning for quite some time utilizing this website as my main resource. Whatever I do, I want to do it right. I am most into overall asthetics of the tank, and fun factor of the fish. Something I can watch after a long day and drift away in awe. My maximum starting tank will be a 180, but a smaller growout tank for 2 years is preferred. This is why I have ruled out my "dream" Peacock Bass Tank for now.

I am mesmorized with the graceful yet aggressive Jardini, but worried about how the overall tank will look without much decor. The Fahaka puffer's oddball look and playful nature seem fun, but could also be boring unless its feeding time. My wife loves African Cichlids, but I am not sure they are Monster enough for me lol.

So what do you suggest for my first tank????

Jardini Arowana, Fahaka Puffer, African Cichlid Community, or other? Why?

hmmm this one is tuff due to the fact that all of those fish are very interesting... i love the arowana because of its grace and beauty. but i love puffers. once they adapt well they dont tend to be that boring, they can be rather interesting. My vote would go for a cichlid community though. They dont look like monsters when you buy them, but they can get to be monsters (sort of). They may not be huge like a monster but they have the appetite of one. And not to mention they are highly entertaining. They adapt to a spot in the tank, claim their territory, and it becomes rather hilarious when the others go near each other's spot with all of the chasing, jumping, and hide & seeking. You could have some wonderful color with the cichlids, but it is completley up to you. THats my vote

My vote is for an Aro of some kind and to make the tank not look so empty simply add more wood, grass, decor. I too love the Jar and currently have one in my 180g along with a few other fish. Fingers crossed he is not a killer, but time will tell.

An Aro gets massive and is very interactive with you during feeding time.

Good answers so far.... need more though :)

Harley: do you think an aro is too complicated for a first tank, or with proper research and planning not so much?

i would go for the jardini if you can get the 6'x2' 180 off the bat. there not hard to keep or plan for as some may think, basic feedings, 180's a good size for an adult, and proper matenince and filtration and your set.
