I have some juvenile dovii I am growing out and just want to keep one male, Not too sure yet what gender I have, heck, I may have all female. My question is however, lets say they were all male. is it always best to keep the one that is much larger than the others? what if the smaller one has nicer colour , or one is showing the least amount of skittishness .? I'm not looking to breed, just asking what do you personally look for when growing a batch out? Hopefully this can help me decide in the near future which to keep. Thanks !

For me I look at the color. Out of my batch I chose the nicest looking one. There were slighty bigger ones but they will all reach similar size IMO so might as well go for the best looking one

Looks and attitude are what I look for. Id take a social fish over a pretty one, but thats all opinion.

In all seriousness, is there such thing as a 'shy' adult dovii ? I have a medium one that loves to great me , yet there is the BIG juvenile who pushes everyone around and is the biggest glutton. its still early as they are only a few inches but wild to see such diversity this young.

It's rare to get a shy dovii. Mine came out of its shell at around 6-8 inches. There are the few exceptions

True but almost anytime ive seen cichlid fry, simply raising a hand will usually scare a bunch but there are usually a couple that rush to the glass and those are the ones I go for. Dovii may be different, ive only seen a batch of fry once.

If you raise a single dovii fry in a tank it will usually be shy until it hits that 8 inch mark. A group will be more active. It's up to you which you decide to keep

That's something I will take into consideration. I have one that comes to the glass, one that is just its shadow, and the big one that is very dominant and does a lot of patrolling. it'll def. be easier once i sex them and go from there.Post pics as soon as I think I know lol.

Hey jagster I love getting involved in your dovii threads. Can I ask why you want another male when you already have a masterpiece?! I would go with attitude if you're trying to pick one. As far as a shy dovii, mine was in the 12-13 inch range and still so skittish he would nearly jump out of his tank to get away from me. Now I know at that size he's not quite "adult" but I wasn't sure if he would ever break out of his shell. I ended up selling him. Now the male I have currently even from 2.5 inches has been a "hey guys I'm right here what's going on?" kind of fish.
