Ok guys....it pains me to even post in this forum...but...whats the best cichlid "shutter" to raise for feeders/possibly selling back to LFS's for minimal store credit.

My main goal is to just mess around and have a mess of feeders for my african/asian tank as well as my north american natives to snack on. If I get too many I know at least 2 LFS's here will buy most cichlid fry at 1" or greater.

I know convicts are the primo rabbits of the cichlid world, but what about jewels? what type/species/name am I looking for to buy? I hear they produce A LOT of fry each spawn and spawn fairly quickly. Also as a side note the species suggested need to be at home in at the very most a 55 gallon. I have a ton of spare tanks from 10-55 and I'd rather not add anything else lol.

Just looking for some input...thanks!

For me, Australoheros sp red ceibals were the rabbits of the cichlid world, and because they didn't need a heater, even better. Besides in tanks, they would spawn every spring in the pond and didn't need to be fed, producing hundreds of fry.

so are there any other species you'd suggest? you are after all one of the best for the cichlid section haha

I was going to suggest convicts...lol I actually have a female flowerhorn who isn't selling but laying eggs constantly so I'm going to buy a male con and get some fry and feed it to my other fish.

I just checked Rapps and Wet Spot, neither had them on the list.
I know MFK member dogofwar was spawning them a while, and a number of other non-heater needing cichlids of the Australoheros genus.
But in reality its just getting a mated pair of something, and giving them enough space to spawn, and not kill each other.
I had a pair of young nicaraguense that spawned like clockwork every 60 days for months on end, in tanks as small as 75 gal.
The ceibals are also fairly small, and would spawn successfully in tanks of 50 gallons and raise fry, and only need green water for months on end.

Jewels are much more prolific than any other fish I personally have kept......300-400 fry every clutch, growth rate is astounding too, I have a 1.5 month-old clutch that has been eating flakes for 2 weeks and is already 1/2" long.....compare that to my 60-80 Convict fry that are 3 months-old and 1/2"

jags, I got about 2000 fry right now, your fish hungry?
