I can't decide which sump I should make emerged or submerged. It's only going to be a 10 gallon sump which type would give me the best results for the small amount of space a 10 gallon provides?

If I was doing mine again I'd prob go for k1 driven by air pumps and maybe a power head ... I'd def say the extra water volume gives you extra benefit and extra stability with the tank and you can get some of the wet dry effect with a strong oxygen pump under the media

I'd try to go bigger than a 10 gallon sump if you can...even a 15 gallon tank would be better if that's all you have for room (same footprint). You will only be able to have the sump 1/2 to 3/4 full to allow for backflow if your power goes out or you turn your pump off. If it's a very large tank, it won't work at all. The backflow will flood a 10 gallon sump. I wouldn't use a 10 gallon sump on anything larger than a 55, and even that is pushing it.

My overflow will handle 600 gph and the display tank is a 75 gallon I have a small hystrix stingray with a rope fish and a pleco in the tank unfortunately without destroying my stand I can only fit a 10 gallon under it. The height of a 15 gallon would be to tall. I have a large canister filter packed with ceramic rings that's my main filter and it handles the bio load very well. I change 75% of the water every 4 days. The only reason I want to add a sump is for surface skimming since rays need a high protein diet I have protein film at the top of my water. I also have adequate surface agitation but the film gets to thick after a couple days.

Well, you'll just hae to make it work I guess. Hope you plan to upgrade in the near future. Rays need way bigger than 75 gallons. Even a smaller species like hystrix needs at least a 180 (72×24)

Yeah I'm planning a 6x3, if I can't get a larger tank my boss has multiple big tanks with his smallest being a 500 gallon. Honestly though I saw jasons male hystrix and he's probably only 8 inches across and he's also 6 years old. He also had a 2 year old female that was maybe an inch or 2 larger then the pup I bought so I have plenty of time. I could always buy a stock tank to.
