I could do either/or but not both on a 6' 125 gallon.

Fluval FX5 + AquaClear 110 (fluval having 6 foam blocks, 1 polishing pad, 1 fine pad, bio-max pre-filter "ceramic rings" )

or

2 Eheim 2217's w/no hob filter

would you even need the hob if you went with the fx5 i mean isnt it rated for 400g?

The "up to XX gal tank" rating on filters is useless... the AC 110 is rated for up to 110 gal tanks...

Either filtration option originally mentioned would be able to do a sufficient job if set up logically...

Decor has a big impact on filtration... If your decorations make dead spots, you have to overcome those dead spots with current...

The fish you stock in the tank will have a big impact on filtration needs. Tetras make little poop that slight currents can easily wisk away into a filter... but adult PBass make huge poop that weighs more and takes more to move into an intake...

The amount of maintenance you wish to do on the tank also has a big impact. If you would be happy to commit to frequent vacuumings, then strong currents aren't at all necessary. But if you want to make the system require little personal work to keep it looking fresh, stronger currents are necessary.

The flow rates of the AC + FX5 will be a lot stronger than the 2217's... so in most cases I think they will be a better choice...

No filter has a better reputation than Eheims, so if you are stockign small fish you may consider them though...

Either way you may want to add some powerheads... but you can set things up without them and see what you think. Then add them if and when you need them...

go with either canister. i personally have an fx5 on my 125 gal but the eheim is probably just as good of a filter. i'm sure some eheim owners would argue that the eheim is better. you probably have some fx5 owners who would counter. it really does not matter. when you buy either filter, you're making a good investment. to each his own . . .

I completely disagree that the Eheim 2217 and the FX5 are equal filters...

I think a lot of people post without reading or thinking their response out... :screwy:

I stay away from that haha BUT

i am cycling my 125 and have FX5
Fish:
3 oscars Juvy's
1 Jag. cichlid
2 plecos

When fish get larger i will be Adding a AquaClear 110

I think its a Great Combo

I would think the Eheim 2262 would be equal to the FX5. But for the 125, I would go with the FX5 and the ac, or Eheim 2262 w/ the AC.

i agree with the quote they are not equal, first i have to say i had both and i was very unhappy with the fx5 lack of media eheim 2028 hold more media then the fx5 also you can't put any polishing pad on the fluval because it trap air something already discuss before and if you are looking at the reading turn over it's not everything, amaount of bioload i had also ocean clears and nu-clear canister which you can use any pump from 800 to 1600 gph but for what, finally i have to say fx5 not a bad filter but onestly eheim 2217 they are better filters go with the 2 eheim 2217 you won't regreat it

Its posts like these that really make me realize why I can never get crystal clear water on my heavily stocked 125g.

filtration (AC110, rena xp1, whisper60)
