Which would you chose for a 55g?

None of those I'll choose for a 55g. I'll give them more room. 55g is maily use for growing them up. Lol! Especially the retro and the beutt which can grow a bit bigger. Largest record ever caught for a beutt is 21". So many upper jaw species are stunted because of this always 55g+bichirs for life.

keeping them in there is like jail for life.

An albino senegal (usually max out around 8-10") would be your best bet in a 55g, but ultimately you'll want more room for any of them. I was told a 55g was fine for senegals/delhezis/palmas etc when I was first starting out with Polys, but after seeing my old 6-7" senegal constantly pacing the tank and swimming against the glass I wouldn't really recommend less than a 125g for life. Sure it can be done but they need/deserve more room imho.

You can definitely keep a couple to a few senegals in a 55g if they are alone. Speaking from experience though, I can say that if you want anything more than two or three senegals by themselves, you are going to want a bigger tank. I still have a while before my 55g gets too small, but it will happen.

I'd go for a 75g at least if you want to keep any more than a few bichirs.

55g is fine for me if I could put a plat sen in it. It would be my only pride.
