Got a whiptail Catfish, just wondering if he'll be ok in copper (0.25 ppm)and aquarium salt (1 tbsp/5 gal.?)
Not sure how sensitive these guys are.
I don't see any symptoms of parasites but I generally do a 3 wk copper treatment during quarantine.

I don't like treating the fish while under quarantine. If it is not broken, why attempt to fix it?

Well, every time I get a new fish from a LFS it usually ends up with something.

What do they usually end up something with? Skin flukes? Internal parasites? Copper will never prove helpful and harmless to all fish you get. If you have problems with internal parasites, use levamisole hydrochloride. Levamisole hydrochloride is hardly toxic enough to harm a fish at 3-4 mg per liter.

Furthermore, we do not use aquarium salt unless needed, which in your situation, you don't. Keep it away unless your fish suffered from ich. There is no such thing as a miracle product that can eliminate every disease there is. Salt is not going to help much at all and neither does copper. You cannot guarantee a perfectly parasite-free fish at all.

I can see you know your stuff. Levamisole Hydrochloride is hard to get (available from ValleyVet.com) and isn't a cure all either. It is very impressive though. It should be noted that it works as a fish vomiting agent and the fish will not eat while it is in the tank and until it is flushed out of their systems. BTW, I have never had fish eat the medicated food treated with it. They would mouth it and then spit it out :irked:

I think CopperSafe is going to be the best treatment for most fish (not so sure about for cats). Fish will still eat while in it and it is excellent for treating all external parasites.
