So I got my 10g on a whisper 20 HOB filter, I am wondering what I should used for media for it. I know they have the pouches you can buy, but are those necessary? It also has the little sponge like thing in there. Would it be okay if I didnt use the pouches, I am pretty sure they have carbon in them...I dont have the box right in front of me. Can I just buy another sponge thing for it or how should I set it up? Bio bag, thats what they are called, do I need those or is there something better? Are they necessary? The other piece is called Bio-Foam.

You don't have to use the carbon, the polyester pouches are good for mechanical filtration. Unfortunately the Whisper 20 doesn't have much room for additional media. The sponge provided is for biofiltration. If you don't overstock too much, that should be fine.

i have one on my shrimp/snail breeding tank.. i just use the sponge and an empty carbon bag.. pot scrubbers also work.. its ok if they stick out of the water a bit

cool, I will be getting some bio balls for it then. I have got a fluval 304 on my 55g as well, could I use bio balls in there as well? Right now I use the Bio-Max right now, would bio balls work better?

I like the biomax.

Should I go with biomax for the whisper to? I see no reason I couldn't right?

Is it possible to over filter something? I am having trouble with my Fluval lately, I cant upgrade my tank right now but plan to in the future so would there be any problem getting something like a FX5 for the 55g? I know thats way over kill, but does it really matter? Same thing with using the Whisper 20 on a 10g? Any problem with that?

I plan on changing this tank over to sand. Would it work to use some of the gravel in the HOB filter as bio media? Would this work at all? Or would Bio-Max work even better? Would I want to make sure whatever I put in there is totally submerged or do I want it to stick above the water line a little?
