Whisper 60 vs aquaclear 50

I've got an AC-50, Whisper 60, and an Eheim 2212 on my 55g.

The Whisper 60 is annoying - having to buy new filter stuff for it b/c they deteriorate after rinses, it gets clogged really fast, and has lots of overflow. I have no problem with the noise though.

The AC-50 is awesome, I've always been happy with them! I would get an AC-50, or a size up.
 
i cut up AC110 foam filter blocks and put them in my marineland bio-wheel filters. better mechanical and bio filtration, but no chemical filtration or buying cartridges

I agree, the cartridges are a pain and carbon is a waste of media space. Aqua Clear is quiter and more economical, plus you can put any kind of media you like in it.
 
I was a big fan of the Penguins, mainly because of the price. I have 5 Penguin 350's and they work very well. I just got an Aquaclear 30 for my mom's 10 gallon betta tank, I really like the Aquaclear a lot bettter now than the Penguins I have and am thinking of getting some Aquaclear 110's and switching them out with my Penguins. Main thing I like is the ammount of biofitration that you can have in the Aquaclears, you can add you own media without a problem. The Penguins do have the bio-wheels, but don't know if that is enough to make up for what the Aquaclears have. Also with the Penguins, a lot of you bacteria gets held in your filter catriges, and if you go to replace them you loose all that bacteria that was on them. My vote is to just get another Aquaclear.
 
im currently running 2 - 70 gallon Aquaclears for my tank. In one i have Sponge, carbon, biomax filter, other- sponge, ammonia, biomax.. so i dont have any problems with keeping the proper bacteria in the tank, and all my levels are perfect.
 
One other thing... I also put pre-filters on all my AC-50's and AC-110's. They increase the filter media and cut down on gunk clogging up the media in the basket.

I don't replace cartridges.....


I love Both Emps and Ac's ;)
