If you started out your hobby like I did, you had some smaller tanks filtered by Whisper Filters. While these are pretty good mechanical filters, they are otherwise junk. I still use them to remove particulate waste. Instead of buying those expensive pouches, I have an alternative:

1. You don't need the carbon.

2. Instead of buying the pouches, buy filter floss and cut a piece that will wrap around the plastic holder. Clip the tops and you have a mechanical filter without the expensive cartridges. This costs pennies per changes as opposed to a buck a piece.

didnt think pix would be needed.... its pretty self explanatory....ive done this... i do this with most HOB filters... esspecially bio wheel ones..

Thats what I used to do as well.

good tip, I just stuff mine with poly fill
