I got a rope fish 2 days ago and right off the bat it didnt seem right but thought it was just stressed. Today when trying to get him to eat i finally saw what is bothering him, under its jaw there is a blister, white bump red and irritated around it. Looks really sore. Is there anything I can do to help it? Looks like it needs popped.

I can try and get some pictures.

I've been trying to find something close to what you are describing. It might be a tumor or cyst. If it looks more like a blister it could be gas bubble disease.

Gas Bubble Disease
Symptoms:
Bubbles/blisters can be found beneath the skin and inside the body. They are mostly found around the head and the eyes.
Cause:
A condition known as "over saturation" is created due to the dissolving of excess amounts of gas. A certain amount of gas is always dissolved in liquid in relationship to such factors as pressure and temperature. When these gas levels are to high, the water will constantly attempt to release the gas in the form of small bubbles. Too much sun and the heavy plant and algae growth associated with this is a common cause of over saturation. Since the plants take up and release a lot of oxygen, the fishes' blood can itself become over saturated.
Treatment:
Reduce the amount of sun light the aquarium is exposed to. Further, an air stone can help prevent problems.

Although I think you are describing a cyst is more likely. Pictures would help.

Im at work right now but will get a pic up this evening. I have had small treated lumber splinters where i got most of it out but a tiny piece stayed behind and festered up just like the spot on this fish. If it is the gas bubble, being in my tank should help it then because it never has direct light and is aireated well. I did a cleaning and partial water change last night but of course with my luck had only about a tablespoon of aquarium salt left.

Thanks for helping me out

Your welcome but I really don't know if it's gas bubble disease. It really sounds like you have something else going on with it. I hope everything clears up for the little guy. Maybe doing regular water changes will help it heal.

btw just noticed your sig, its the same for me. But If motorcycles cost the same as fish and had a 5 day return policy it would be a tough competition between the two lol

when I tried to take a picture I noticed the white bump was gone and looked less inflamed, it must have popped. He is still acting odd, and I havnt noticed it eating yet. Until I see him eat, it wont surprise me to come home and find him dead. I will try and hand feed him again tonight.
