So I picked up this driftwood as part of a deal with a 55g and a stand ($40 couldn't turn it down!). Well anyway I got this large piece of beautiful driftwood with the deal and when I started soaking it I noticed these little white bumps all over it. When I'm done soaking it I'm going to try to scrub it and see if they come right off. I've read online they may be snail eggs but I'm not too sure. The tank has been shut down for a few months and in thier garage as well (I live in Illinois so temp has been well below freezing). Are these something I should worry about? Or do they look like snail eggs? I know I should ask the previous owner but I bought it on Craigslist and I just feel weird asking a question about it like that. Thanks!

Messaged previous owner and they said they didn't have snails. Also not sure if this is in the gut section or not or not...

that looks different than what I've experienced, but it is totally normal for new driftwood to sprout white algae or mold. For me it's normally more white fuzzy looking, but it may be what your spots are.

To be safe you can pour boiling water over it and let it soak in that for a while, should kill off anything harmful

I would either bake it, or bleach it then scrub or power wash it down before adding to your tank.

I was going to do boiling water for the next time I soak it. It's pretty large, not sure it's going to fit in my oven to bake

Yeah, that doesn't look like the usual driftwood fuzz at all. They do look a LOT like snail eggs... There was no Nerite snail in her tank?

I would be a little nervous about putting it in my tank without them gone or until someone here can definitively say what it is.

I plan on putting it in boiling water and scrubbing them all off before I do anything further with it. The 55 gallon it came with is only going to be used to raise fry in. I think I'm going to keep it in that tank for a while after cleaned and boiled just to make sure. Worst case scenario if some kind of worm / creature hatches the fry can eat it lol. And yes the previous owner said they only had fish in the aquarium
